Tioga County History and Vital Records

Tioga County's history reflects the character of north-central Pennsylvania. Lumber and agriculture drove the economy in the nineteenth century. The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, formed by the erosion of Pine Creek over thousands of years, is the region's most dramatic natural feature. Wellsboro, the county seat, developed into a prosperous Victorian town with a distinct character preserved in its historic architecture. The gas-lit main street is one of the few remaining examples in Pennsylvania.

Records at the Tioga County Courthouse in Wellsboro reach back to the county's founding in 1804. Probate records, estate inventories, and wills from the early nineteenth century are on file with the Register of Wills. These records can supplement death research for families in the pre-registration era. For deaths before 1893, estate records and church records are the primary sources. Many of the county's historic churches have records dating to the early 1800s that have been preserved or transcribed by local historical societies.

Pennsylvania death registration became statewide in 1906. From that point, all Tioga County deaths required a state certificate. The PA State Archives death index covers Tioga County from 1906 to 1975. The index uses the Russell Soundex method for deaths from 1920 to 1924 and from 1930 to 1951. All other years use alphabetical order. Digital images of death certificates from 1906 to 1972 are available on Ancestry.com. The AncestryPA partnership allows Pennsylvania residents to access Ancestry.com free at public libraries. Death certificates become public records 50 years after the date of death.
